Mr. Anthony Ferguson, President of The Trinidad and Tobago Taekwondo Association, was elected President of The Commonwealth Taekwondo Union (CTU) and already assumed Office at the beginning of January, 2016 to complete the one year left in the term of Mr. Adrian Tranter, OBE; who resigned from the position and also from the Presidency of The British Taekwondo Control Board (BTCB).
Mr. Tom Stammer, new head of the BTCB and an International Referee of note, has also been appointed to serve as the CTU’s new Secretary General.
The new President of the CTU is a Council Member and Juridical Chair of The World Taekwondo Federation (WTF).
Mr. Ferguson said that his immediate task was to get the right people in place to assist in carrying out the organisation’s mandate and to do a bit of housekeeping. He said that he looked forward to fostering a sustained relationship between The Commonwealth Games Federation un
der its new President, Dr. Louise Martin and the WTF.
He mentioned that the accomplishments of the WTF are very much in harmony with the Objectives of the The Commonwealth of Nations which recognised that Sport is a vehicle to international Peace and Development.
As evidence, he pointed to the meeting last year between Dr. Chungwon Choue, President of the WTF and Dr. Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of The United Nations at the U.N.’s Headquarters and to the speech of Dr. Choue at the plenary of the U. N. during the “2015 U.N. International Day of Peace”, where he presented the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation, a project that will harness the power of taekwondo to promote physical fitness, respect and understanding in refugee camps worldwide.
Ferguson also pointed to the early success of the first steps of the, Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation that started a pilot project in the camps of Zaatari and Azraq in Jordan in December last year and will launch its second program in Nepal on January 29.
The reportage associated with these initiatives has been laudable. The President opined that these were among the strengths a stronger link with the WTF would bring to the CGF’s Table.
In addition to the Secretary General, two other critical Appointments have already been made: Mr. John Kotsifas, an Australian lawyer who also serves as President of the Oceanic Taekwondo Union has been appointed Chairman of The Constitution Reform Committee and; Mr. Lim Teong Chin, Secretary General of The Singapore Taekwondo Federation has been appointed to serve as Referee Chair. Other appointments are expected to follow soon.
