It was with great pleasure that we received the news that the IPC Governing Board decided to include Para-Taekwondo kyorugi (K40) on the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Programme. I am sure that you were as delighted as us to receive this news!
As you are aware, much had to be done in a very short period, but all the efforts and work was not in vain. For the progress made, all the input of the different stakeholders must be acknowledged. In particular, President Chungwon Choue who set the aim on ensuring that taekwondo was as exciting and dynamic as possible. This aim includes the growth and inclusion of Para-Taekwondo during his term of office – he has been a constant support to the initiatives of the Para-Taekwondo committee. His full support kept many members, athletes and officials motivated throughout this period of development of the sport to a level where it can be included in the Paralympic programme. Of course, there are many member national associations, their athletes and officials, as well as the continental unions who generously contributed in many ways to reach this point.
Thanks to Dr. Choue' support I believe that we will see continued growth of para-taekwondo for many years to come.
Finally, I would like to thank each member of the WTF Para-Taekwondo Committee for all their efforts in the past 12 months – it is just more than 12 months ago when we had the first committee meeting. It is a great team – Terrie Moore, Head of Classification, and members Gabe Fife, David O’Sullivan and Fernando Akilian. One person that is almost an icon who stands out – Olof Hansson, who served as Para-Taekwondo Coordinator and was recently appointed as Para Taekwondo Project Manager. He has been a driving force of this project and worked tirelessly to ensure that all administration is in place for policies and procedures to be passed by the WTF Council.
I look forward to the continued expansion of the sport in numbers of athletes and number of countries.
